Karaoke is singing along to the instrumental version of a song while the lyrics scroll on a screen. The word comes from Japanese and means "empty orchestra". You can sing on a stage at a karaoke bar or with friends in a private room, and no singing experience is needed.

Most karaoke venues have tens of thousands of songs, from current pop and hip-hop hits to classic rock, R&B, country, musicals and Disney favorites. Many stream songs from online libraries, so new releases show up quickly. If you have a must-sing song, ask the venue or check its song list before you go.

English songs are available everywhere. KTV and noraebang venues usually have large Korean, Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese) and Japanese catalogs, and many also have Spanish, Tagalog, Vietnamese, Thai and Hindi songs. Selections vary by venue, so call ahead if you're looking for a specific language.

At a karaoke bar you sign up and sing on a shared stage in front of everyone in the room, usually on set nights hosted by a KJ. A private karaoke room is rented by the hour just for your group, with its own screen, mics and song system, so you can sing as much as you like.

Both mean private-room karaoke. KTV is the common name at Chinese and Taiwanese-style venues, and noraebang ("song room" in Korean) is used at Korean venues. Many offer food and drinks delivered to your room.

Prices vary by room size, day and time. In New York, small rooms can start around $20 to $40 an hour on weekday afternoons, while large VIP rooms on weekend nights can run $100 an hour or more. Some venues charge per person per hour or add a food and drink minimum, so check the listing and confirm with the venue.

Karaoke bars that serve alcohol are usually 21 and over, especially at night. Many private-room KTV and noraebang venues welcome all ages during the day or with a parent. Age rules vary, so check with the venue before you go.

For groups, a private room keeps everyone together and lets you pick the playlist. Look for listings with private rooms and ask the venue about room sizes, party packages and decorations. For a lively crowd, pick a bar with a popular karaoke night.
