Excellent place for a drink in West Asheville. The atmosphere is fabulous; you walk down the steps, and it gets darker and quieter until you emerge into a subterranean cocoon of coolness and cocktails. The disconnect from the outside is unique, as most other bars have windows, outside noise, and natural light—all reminding you where you are, what the weather is, and what time of day it is. This bar is completely isolated in terms of outside sensory input. The effect is interesting, as you almost forget where you are. It reminded me of cellar bars in Prague. Inside, the aesthetic is something between a 60s rat-pack vibe and a palm reader's den, with quirky accents like lights in the shape of an outstretched hand. The very nice bartender was dressed in black and sort of disappeared and reappeared behind the dimly lit bar whenever needed, making some great drink recommendations. We had a wonderful time and will definitely be back.
One of my favorite haunts ❤️ there’s always a friendly face and an amazing drink waiting at the bottom of the steps. Sometimes fun snacks too. . As a small fem person, I also appreciate how safe I feel coming here alone. No one bothers me so I can even journal here. The bartenders are very attentive to any troublesome situations. 10/10 ✨
Rich was the best bartender we’ve had in years. He was attentive, detail oriented, and easy to talk to. Will come back when we visit again to see him!
THE LOW DOWN ~ New Favorite!! This was my first time visiting this beautiful hidden gem. Very elegant but not stuffy. Open minded, colorful, sexy, clean, great music selection, delicious snacks, wonderful eclectic knowledgeable staff, very fair prices for the quality, and ooooh.... the beverages *Le Sigh*... Personally, I had the Mighty Fine Espresso Martini ~ so incredibly perfect, I will most likely order that again... My partner was suggested the Ardberg 5 year, and we also tried the Laphroaig 10 year, (I believe)... DELICIOUS... my whistle and tastebuds went wild. Well done Dearest "T.L.D." If you come to Asheville and want to go to the best bar in town, Lowdown is #1. Factoring in the ambiance, bartenders, cocktails, and spirits, you will feel like Dorothy after leaving Oz for Kansas. There's no place like Asheville. The Lowdown is my favorite spot to get a drink in this iconic haven. I live here, and it's the one bar I recommend to everyone. The energy is so inviting you never want to leave. They even have shuffle board and spectacular bar snacks! Go as soon as you can to be transported to a world of your cocktail dreams come true. Once you go low, you'll feel high on life.
