Scenic Setting, Hardworking Staff – Worth the Wait We visited Rum Runners on July 14, 2025, and while the experience came with a wait, it was still a memorable evening. When we arrived, all tables were full and only two servers on duty—our server immediately apologized and let us know some staff hadn’t shown up. Despite that, she absolutely hustled all night long with a great attitude. Major props for her effort! Yes, it took two hours, but we didn’t mind. The beautiful patio setting right on the water made for a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere while we waited. The food was just okay—mostly fried and a limited menu—but we went in expecting that. Nothing fresh. For us, it was more about the vibe and view, and on that front, it delivered. Several boats arrived at the patio dock and docked while we were there. Fun to watch them come and go. Prices were reasonable, and the staff did their best under pressure. If you go, go for the setting—and bring a little patience just in case. Parking was easy and convenient. Sunset was amazing afterwards too!

We were visiting Erie, PA and decided on Rum Runners for a late lunch because it has seating right on the waterfront looking out to Presque Isle. We both ordered perch and French fries, which were very good. The restaurant is all part of the Bicentennial Tower complex in Erie, which is a must see if you are in the area. Our server was very pleasant and attentive to our table and we had a good experience while enjoying the view. Check out the "pirate ship" that swung by while we were eating.

Rum Runner is located right by Lake Erie, making it a perfect spot to watch the sunset while enjoying your food and drinks. Everything we tried today was delicious. All the fried seafood was fresh and came with three sauces (my favorite is the cold sweet sauce). The burger was juicy and well-seasoned. I really love their special cocktails—my go-tos are the Passion Colada and the Rum Runner. Both drinks are refreshing and perfect for summer. The staff is friendly and welcoming. Had a great time here and will definitely be back!

***Update, my wife and I both got food poisoning from the burger*** Rum Runners used to be one of my favorite spots years ago, but our recent visit left me feeling a bit underwhelmed. The setting is definitely still a highlight—right on the water with great views, and the prices are very reasonable, especially for a waterfront restaurant. We also appreciated our server’s honesty. She was juggling too many tables and let us know upfront that service might be slow, which it was, but I don’t fault her at all. She was doing her best, and her transparency was appreciated. Unfortunately, a few other aspects fell short. The outdoor seating was extremely windy, which made it tough to keep lightweight items like napkins and menus on the table. There’s also very little shade, so the direct sun can be uncomfortable—especially for older guests or young kids. Food-wise, everything was just okay. My burger tasted slightly off (**two days later, I am updating to say that my wife and I both got food poisoning from this burger we shared**), and while the mammoth pretzel looked impressive, it lacked that distinct pretzel flavor. Fries were good, but could have used a little salt. None of it was terrible, but nothing stood out either, and with so many other options in the Erie area, I walked away wishing we’d tried somewhere new. Live music was setting up as we were finishing, which could have been a nice touch—though the crew setting up was smoking, and the wind carried it right into our table, which was unpleasant while trying to eat. All in all, it’s still a nice spot for a drink or a casual bite thanks to the location and affordability, but I’m sad to see how much it has declined compared to what I remember from years ago.

Service was extremely slow, and we were sitting at the bar. My perch dinner was fantastic and their homemade tartar sauce is by far the best I've ever had! It has onion in it and really gave a nice flavor pop! The Rum Runner cocktail was very good, tasted like a cherry slurpie!
